Sustainable Skidaway

Sustainable Skidaway  is a multi-year initiative with multiple partners that will result in the The Landings becoming certified as a sustainable community by Audubon International. Partners include The Landings Association, The Landings Club, and volunteers from UGA Marex and the Skidaway Island State Park.

One initiative among many that will lead to certification is to highlight the natural and historic sites at The Landings. Signage for those sites is in its earliest stages, with the first installed at Delegal Marina Tower in mid-February 2015. For many sites, including the two tabby-walled cemeteries located on Palmetto and Oakridge golf courses, it was determined that more research was needed before drawing attention to the sites. Research will enable us to be accurate in interpretation and to better protect the sites.

The work of Armstrong State University Professor Laura Siefert, along with her students and community volunteers, at the cemetery sites in late 2014 is highly appreciated. Her report about what as found at the two cemeteries can be accessed here.
